I applied to college with the intention of becoming a midwife. Once I took a Medicine and Culture course with an Anthropologist, I knew I could combine my two passions; birth and culture. I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Birth Anthropology and have had the pleasure of becoming a birth and postpartum doula. I wrote a research paper entitled "The Language of Birth," where I interviewed American mothers on the language used during their labor and birth. The most surprising thing I found out from my interviews was that even though many of my informants gave birth 20+ years ago, they could clearly remember what was spoken to them and how it made them feel. For my senior thesis, I conducted fieldwork with postpartum doulas in the PNW on their role during the 4th trimester. They shared their experiences working with clients and how they were able to help make them feel comfortable. I strive to make sure my clients feel supported, listened to, and loved.
